SMART Recovery Research

Researchers at the University of Wollongong School of Psychology have partnered with SMART Recovery Australia to undertake research regarding the experience of the program's participants.

Use of SMART Recovery for the wellbeing of rural men

Dr Alison Beck, Dr Briony Larance, Dr Rebecca Gray and Professor Peter Kelly from the University of Wollongong are conducting a study to better understand the role of SMART Recovery in supporting the wellbeing of men living in rural NSW (Western NSW, Far West and Murrumbidgee Local Health Districts).

To do this, we would like to speak to men living in Western NSW, Far West and Murrumbidgee regions of NSW who have participated in a SMART Recovery program.

We are interested to know:

  • how, when and why they came to be involved in SMART Recovery and their use of other treatment and support options
  • the ways SMART Recovery may or may not have helped to support their wellbeing
  • what helped, and what got in the way of accessing treatment and support.

If you have participated in a SMART Recovery program in the last 12 months, there are two ways you can help our research:

  1. Participate in a phone interview with one of the research team
    and/or;
  2. Complete three surveys across a six-month period

About the research

We are looking for:

  • 20 men to have a telephone conversation (up to 60 minutes) and complete a brief 5–10-minute questionnaire.
  • Up to 120 men to complete a questionnaire three times across a six-month period. The questionnaire can be completed online or over the phone. It contains questions about you, your wellbeing and your experience with treatment and support. It takes around 30 minutes to complete on each occasion.

If you might be interested in helping with this research, please download the information statement(s) for further information:

We can't promise any direct benefits, but your contribution is an important step in improving the treatment and support options that are available for men living in regional and rural communities.

We can also offer reimbursement (up to $120 AUD in gift cards*) in acknowledgement of your time, contribution and any inconvenience.

*Up to $30 will be provided per each questionnaire completed online, subject to data quality checks. $30 will also be provided for the telephone interview.
